An Inside Look at Our Sustainable Packaging

Biossance Sustainable Packaging

It’s one thing to say we’re a sustainable skincare brand, and it’s another to actually do the work. At Biossance, we take care to ensure that our products leave our planet healthy and beautiful while doing the same for your skin. This not only includes our sustainable skincare formulas, it also extends to our packaging. Not only are our tubes and bottles completely recyclable, our outer cartons are also tree-free. Here’s what that means for our planet.

Our Tree-Free Paper

We turn to our trusty MVP (most valuable plant) Brazilian sugarcane to create tree-free paper for our fully recyclable outer cartons.

Our sugarcane grows sustainably in Brazil where it is naturally irrigated by the region’s plentiful rainfall. Once it’s harvested, the sugarcane is pressed into juice to be used in our fermentation-based squalane production process. The fibrous waste product, called bagasse, is then used to create our outer packaging, which is free of plastic windows and metallic ink dyes to ensure full recyclability.

Our Bottles and Jars

We use glass wherever possible to maximize your ability to upcycle and minimize our use of plastics. When we do use plastic, we make sure we do it responsibly. Here are three ways we make sure our plastic use doesn’t negatively impact the planet:

  1. We utilize post-consumer-recycled plastics made from ocean trash for many of our pumps and tubes.
  2. We manufacture some of our own plastics from ethanol using the waste products from our squalane-manufacturing process.
  3. Our bottles are 100% recyclable.

How to Recycle Properly in Three Easy Steps

Upcycling is the easiest and most planet-friendly way to re-use your empties. But when that’s not possible, you’ll need to recycle it. But while most people toss their plastics into the correct bin and assume they’ve done their duty, that’s unfortunately not the case.

The actual process of recycling is surprisingly complicated. All plastic trash gets sorted at recycling plants, but when it arrives dirty or contains multiple components, it often ends up in the landfill. Fortunately, you can help prevent your plastic packaging from becoming landfill waste by recycling it properly using these three rules of thumb:

  1. Rinse empty containers, making sure they’re free of residue.
  2. Remove and toss attached paper labels. We make sure ours come off easily with a little water and minimal tugging.
  3. Disassemble packaging components and sort properly. Each product page on our site has a detailed description of how to do this.
