What do sustainability and skincare have in common? Everything.
At least here at Biossance.
This year, Kokomo Private Island in Fiji became the intersection of ocean conservation and ethically-produced skincare, as we hosted 11 influencers to help spread the word about sustainability and ocean conservation.
Why We Journeyed To Kokomo
We wanted to give influencers a firsthand look at what was happening to the world’s coral reefs and how we as a brand are making a difference to our oceans. Our hope was that the added exposure would raise awareness and help consumers make informed, sustainable shopping decisions.
We chose Kokomo Private Island not only because of its proximity to the environment we’re trying to protect, but also because of its sustainability efforts.
Kokomo is completely self-sustained, from the water in their refillable bottles down to the vanilla beans in guests’ dessert. In addition Kokomo is well known for its ocean conservation efforts, which range from a no-take fishing zone around the island, to coral restoration, ocean cleanup and manta ray protection.
It was important that we share this perspective so that our guests could adopt and share a more sustainable way of life.
An Itinerary Built on Sustainability
Coral Restoration Project And A Beachfront Lab
Our guests’ first full day found them diving right in as we helped install a brand new nursery in to the Kokomo Coral Gardens. Guests worked collaboratively to attach coral fragments to a coral nursery tree. The tree is then attached to the sea floor, allowing the corals to grow within the nutrient-and-sunlight-rich water column to form colonies.
Once established, these colonies are then transplanted to the existing reef, where they help improve health, biodiversity, and abundance for decades to come.
A Beachfront Lab To Show How Squalane Benefits The Skin
Most of the influencers we hosted already knew that our sugarcane-based squalane is our ultra-effective hero ingredient. But radiant, hydrated skin from head to toe is just the start. We wanted our guests to experience the scinence-y side of squalane firsthand.
Other beauty companies use olive-based squalane. While this is an improvement over using squalene, which traditional comes from shark livers, our sugarcane-based manufacturing method is better because it:
- Produces squalane that’s 20 times purer compared with olive-based squalane
- Is superior-performing compared with olive-derived squalane
- Utilizes a circular manufacturing process that enables us to power our manufacturing plant and produce our paper packaging
- Is bioidentical to the moisture that naturally occurs in human skin.
Many of our guests had never understood squalane in this way. They had heard of it or read the name on our bottles, but the real “aha” moment came when they realized the clinical power behind it. We were not only be able to demonstrate how our formulas melt into the skin to deliver weightless hydration, but to be able to explain how squalane benefits the skin.
A Squalane Spa Day
With their brains brimming with squalane science, we sent our guests on a spa experience which utilized our clinically proven products in customized facials. Local Fijian therapists utilized microcirculation massage techniques to apply a double cleanse, mask, massage, eye treatment, serum, moisturizer, lip balm and sunscreen to each guest.
A Skincare-Centric Luncheon
After their spa experience, our relaxed and glowing group of influencers were treated to a farm-to-table lunch with ingredients inspired by our formulas. From the citrus in our Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil to the lemongrass in our Squalane + Amino Aloe Gentle Cleanser, our guests learned how natural ingredients work together with science to create our clinically-proven formulas.
It’s one thing to say you’re a sustainable brand, but it’s quite another to actually invent effective products that help protect marine environments.
At the end of the trip, our guests went home not only having experienced a weekend of self care and sustainability by the sea, but also understanding how deeply committed we are to our mission of sustainability.
By demonstrating the difference we each can make towards protecting our oceans, we hope to inspire more people to take action both at the checkout counter, and in their daily lives.
