The coming of fall means sweater weather, the start of the holiday season, and skin that sometimes struggles to adapt to the changing seasons. For some people, this can look like uneven texture, an increase in crepiness and fine lines, or even itchy, dry patches brought on by lower humidity. That’s why it’s so important to support your skin by adjusting your skincare with the seasons to help nourish and protect it from the inside out.
To help you along, we’ve put together these eight easy fall skincare tips to help you tweak your routine and keep your skin healthy and radiant.
1. Kick Hydration Up A Notch
Of all our fall skincare tips, this one might be the most important. Keeping your skin well-hydrated makes a big difference in its health and appearance. That’s why experts recommend adjusting your fall skincare routine to include more hydration.
“Just as you layer clothes as it gets colder, you should layer on hydration, too. Skin tends to be drier during the colder months, so it’s a good time to incorporate a hydrating serum, such as our Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum,” says Global Education Manager Alexis Udo-Udoma. “Look for products that include ceramides and fatty acids like our Squalane + Omega Repair Cream. These ingredients help nourish and strengthen your skin’s natural barrier so your skin can retain moisture more effectively.”
2. Switch To An Oil-Based Cleanser
Increased oil production over the summer might have inspired you to grab a foaming cleanser to help clean out pores. But with the change in seasons comes a new challenge: lower humidity. This can cause dry skin to become chapped and flaky due to disruptions in its moisture barrier.
“Oil-based cleansers are great because they break down oil and makeup without stripping the skin,” says Alexis. “Elderberry is also great for balancing the skin, making it perfect for people in cold climates who are prone to reddened or wind-chapped skin. Both cleansers are also ideal for removing thick Halloween makeup or dramatic holiday looks.”
The temperature of the water you cleanse with is also important. While steamy showers seem tempting as temperatures fall, hot water can affect your skin much like a sunburn, disrupting its natural oil production.
“Don’t cleanse your face or body with extremely hot water, and take care to pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it,” says Alexis. “Being gentle with your skin will help it naturally retain moisture.”
3. Dial Up Your Exfoliation
Drier air can cause your skin to appear dull as it parches the top layer of skin cells. Uncover the healthy, radiant skin hiding underneath with gentle, hydrating exfoliation courtesy of our Squalane + Lactic Acid Resurfacing Night Serum.
“Exfoliation is one of the most overlooked fall skincare tips. Doing it regularly helps active ingredients and hydrators penetrate more deeply and enables smoother makeup application,” says Alexis. “Lactic acid is a great product for winter not only because it hydrates as it exfoliates, but also because shorter days make it easier to use this ingredient safely. I especially like it for people who live in areas that experience all four seasons, as lactic acid can cause sun sensitivity that’s more easily avoided when days are shorter.”
Regardless of where you live or what season it is, sunscreen is a must in any fall skincare routine, especially if you’re using a lactic acid product.
“If you want gorgeous, healthy skin, the best thing you can do is use SPF religiously. Period,” says Alexis.
4. Pay Extra Attention To Delicate Areas
The delicate areas of skin around your eyes and lips can easily become dehydrated and chapped in cold, dry air.
“I especially love our Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream and our Squalane + Rose Vegan Lip Balm for fall because they both provide deep, lasting hydration,” says Alexis. “This time of year, I also like to seal in my skincare with a few drops of Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. It adds the prettiest glow and keeps my skin feeling moisturized.”
5. Extend Your Summer Glow
Enjoy radiant skin year-round by doubling down on clinically-proven Vitamin C. There are two types of Vitamin C that are used in Biossance products, and each benefits the skin a little differently.
“The first is Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, which boosts collagen production while blasting dark spots,” Alexis explains. “It’s powerful, but can cause irritation in some people, so we use a very stable form of the ingredient which is also more gentle. Our Squalane + Vitamin C Dark Serum is safe for all skin types and is even more effective when you’re using a lactic acid product in the evening.”
The second type of Vitamin C, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, improves elasticity and firmness while making your skin look bright and glowy. We use a uniquely stable, oil-soluble version in our Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil.
“I love to massage it in with my gua sha tool for a self care moment during stressful seasons like the holidays,” says Alexis. “You can also add a few drops to your makeup for a dewy, glazed donut look.”
6. Stock Up On Travel Sizes
When it comes to skincare, consistency is key for getting the best results.
“There’s nothing worse than going on vacation feeling amazing and having your skin freak out because you didn’t bring the right products,” says Alexis. “I especially love layering Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum with Squalane + Omega Repair cream for holiday travel. Not only is this combination deeply moisturizing and protective, it also plumps those fine lines that pop up after air travel.”
7. Give Your Body Some TLC
You can only extend your summer tan so far, even when you’ve opted for faux glow. Eventually, your skin will try to take matters into its own hands and exfoliate itself, which can lead to patches of dry, flaking skin once cold weather hits.
Help your body along with an in-shower exfoliating treatment followed by a deeply hydrating body cream.
“Our Squalane + Enzyme Sugar Body Scrub is great because it uses two kinds of exfoliation to gently dissolve dead skin cells, then slough them off,” says Alexis. “You can customize your level of exfoliation, too, which means you can go deeper in those trouble spots like heels and elbows.”
Follow your exfoliating treatment with Squalane + Caffeine Clean Body Cream for lasting hydration that also firms and tones. With niacinamide to support skin barrier function, sugarcane-derived squalane to nourish and hydrate, and caffeine to tone trouble areas, this rich moisturizer will keep your skin hydrated and supple all season long.
“If you’re especially dry, you can seal in moisture with a pump or two of 100% Squalane Oil,” says Alexis.
8. Invest in a Humidifier
Fall weather means drier air, both outside and indoors. Humidity levels naturally drop alongside temperatures, and forced air heat means especially dry conditions indoors.
“Low humidity levels can degrade skin barrier function, so the moisture isn’t just evaporating off the surface of your skin, it’s also escaping through cracks in your moisture barrier,” says Alexis. “This can lead to flaking, cracking, and peeling skin, as well as flare ups for people who have eczema.”
Fortunately, there’s an easy fix to this problem: an inexpensive humidifier. Placing one on your desk or bedside table (or both!) can help to create a more hospitable environment for your skin, helping it heal itself from the inside, out.
