Clean Beauty Takes on D.C.

It might surprise you to learn that the FDA bans fewer than 30 ingredients from skincare and cosmetic products in US. Compare that to 1,400 banned in the EU. At Biossance, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to blacklist over 2,000 potentially harmful ingredients from our products. Not because we have to, but because we care about your well-being and set the bar higher for ourselves.

Bottom line: your health is up to beauty brands like us. But it shouldn’t be that way.

We’re not the only brands who feel that beauty products need to be held to a higher standard. Not to mention a more modern one, as the current FDA regulations haven’t been updated since 1938. So we teamed up with over a dozen natural skincare and cosmetic brands to form the Counteract Coalition, an alliance of clean beauty brands that support the Personal Care Products Safety Act introduced by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Susan Collins (R-ME).

Last month, representatives from each Counteract Coalition brand headed to Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers to lobby on behalf of this crucial legislation. Biossance was represented by our SVP, Caroline Hadfield. “It was so refreshing to see competitive companies working together towards a common goal. We’re joining forces to drive this shift in our industry and there is certainly strength in numbers,” she said.

Other coalition members include Beautycounter, côte, Goddess Garden, Follain, OSEA, Peet Rivko, Seventh Generation, Annmarie Gianni Skin Care, Rahua Hair Care, Silk Therapeutics, SW Basics, tenoverten, Vapour Organic Beauty, and Vintner’s Daughter.

“We were all able to see the uniqueness and strengths of the different companies in this industry and form more of a partnership. We’re creating a movement together, rather than sitting in silos and working by ourselves,” Hadfield added. “We all believe there should be more transparency when it comes to the ingredients used in beauty products.”

For most businesses, fighting for stricter regulations and government oversight in our own industry might seem counterintuitive. But for Biossance and our friends in the Counteract Coalition, our brands stand for more than just good skincare. We stand for our customers’ health and for a better planet.

Ready to take a stand with us? Here’s how you can help: Contact your representatives and ask them to support the Personal Care Products Safety Act. Tell them how important these regulations are for your safety and the safety of your loved ones. A cleaner future depends on your support.
