You Asked. We Answered.

Today we're answering some of your most commonly asked questions about skincare and our products. Don't see your question here? Let us know what other questions you’re dying to have answered in the comments below.

Will vitamin C brighten and even out my skin tone?

Yes! Vitamin C is an incredibly powerful ingredient that is clinically proven to visibly brighten and even skin tone. We harness the power of this skincare superstar in our Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil to deliver visible results. But this isn’t the typical vitamin C found in serums with short shelf-lives due to oxidation. We use an oil-soluble form of vitamin C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) that is more stable and 50x more powerful than the ascorbic acid found in most vitamin C serums. Use Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil in the morning and night, after your serum and moisturizer for maximum benefits.

How do I calm skin redness?

You’re in luck! The number one product we recommend for redness is our Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer. Its light formula and effective ingredients like ginger extract visibly reduce redness and irritation. Many of our customers with rosacea have seen a noticeable reduction in redness after just 3 days of use.

When it comes to other types of redness or irritation like eczema, we’ve heard from many customers that they’ve found success using our 100% Squalane Oil. Because it’s lightweight, ultra-hydrating and incredibly gentle, it’s ideal for use on itchy, dry skin.

Can I get the benefits of retinol without the irritation?

For most people, using retinol equals irritation, redness and peeling. That's why we developed our Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum using a plant-based alternative to retinol called Bakuchiol (fun fact: phyto comes from the Greek word for plant). Our serum does not contain any traditional retinol in it, but it has similar benefits. However, since it works in a different way, it doesn’t have the irritation or sun sensitivity associated with retinol.

Is Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Because our Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum does not contain any retinol or retinoids, it does not have the same issues that cause women to have to stop using it. As with any skincare product, we recommend checking with your doctor before using while pregnant or breastfeeding.

I have oily skin, should I be using oils?

Take it from someone who’s had oily skin my whole life—yes, yes, yes! As you know, squalane oil is featured in all of our products, so it’s not surprising that people with oily skin might think to themselves “Why should I put more oil on my face?” It does seem counterintuitive, but fighting oil with oil is actually extremely effective both when it comes to cleansing and moisturizing.

Think of it this way, we know oil repels water, so water-based cleansers might not be the most effective at removing oil and impurities from your skin. That’s when harsh astringent cleaning ingredients are often introduced. However, oil-based cleansers like our Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil can easily remove oil, makeup and dirt without stripping the skin. Remember, you don’t want to feel tight and squeaky clean after cleansing because it can actually cause your skin to produce more oil.

Likewise, using oils for moisturizing can also help reduce overall oiliness. In my case, I found that I produce excess oil because my skin is actually dehydrated. Again, it’s an issue of overproduction to compensate for the dryness. Using oils like our Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil and 100% Squalane Oil over my moisturizer at night helps boost hydration and I’ve found I actually get less oily during the day.

What order should I apply my products?

This is a tricky question to answer because, truly, there’s no wrong way to layer your skincare. As a rule of thumb, we recommend applying products with the least amount of oil in them first, gradually building up to the products with the most oil in them. When in doubt, use this method to determine what goes on first, or reference this guide (also found on all of our product pages) to see where our products should fall in your routine.
