Put Skin Health First With Our New Squalane Hand Sanitizer

by Beth Wischnia July 06, 2020

Clean, healthy hands are more important than ever. While hand sanitizing is an easy and effective way to defend against harmful germs and bacteria, too much of certain hand sanitizer formulas can strip the skin of much-needed moisture, leaving it feeling dehydrated, irritated, and red. With this in mind, Biossance is excited to deliver the ultimate hand sanitizer to help: a hyper-effective and hydrating solution that uses scientific expertise to give you the softest, healthiest hands.

Our new Squalane Hand Sanitizer works in two key parts: First, it powerfully defends hands against germs and bacteria using 70% ethyl alcohol (10% more than the CDC recommended minimum). Next, sugarcane-derived squalane and vegan glycerin set this formula apart by immediately replenishing and protecting the skin’s moisture barrier. Finally, sanitized hands and hydrated hands can be delivered in the same product.

As always, sustainability was also a top priority for us throughout the formulation and packaging process of our Squalane Hand Sanitizer. Our hero ingredient, sugarcane-derived squalane, is a renewable and vegan alternative to squalene, a product that has historically been harvested from shark livers. It also comes packaged in a bottle that uses sustainable sugarcane to reduce overall CO2 emissions.

To provide even more insight into our Squalane Hand Sanitizer formula, we’ve tapped Biossance’s Senior Product Development Manager Ramya Viswanathan. Below, she shares what sets this hand sanitizer apart, more details on its potency, and her advice on how you can use alongside other Biossance favorites.

What makes this hand sanitizer different from others?

“Something special about our hand sanitizer is its unique gel-cream texture. It’s effective against germs and still offers hydration thanks to squalane. Hands are clean without feeling dried out.”

Why did you choose to go above the CDC’s recommended 60% alcohol base by using use 70% ethyl alcohol?

“In addition to the effectiveness, we found that this level quickly evaporates so that you are left with a pleasant after-feel.”

Any pro tips on how to use the Squalane Hand Sanitizer with other Biossance products?

“While our hand sanitizer does keep your hands feeling soft and hydrated, you can keep them extra moisturized throughout the day by adding the Omega Repair Hand Cream to your daily routine.”

Is this hand sanitizer safe for people with sensitive skin?

“This product is simple and effective with minimal ingredients. It does not contain any fragrance and can be suitable for all skin types. However, as with any product, it should not be used on broken skin.”

My industry experience includes years as a beauty editor and leading content for a wide range of skincare and makeup brands. Those experiences led me to Biossance—I was introduced to the brand on an editor press trip in 2017 and instantly fell in love. I toured the labs, created my own 100% Squalane with essential oils, and noticed a dramatic difference in my skin by introducing clean products (especially the Vitamin C Rose Oil) to my regimen. I’m excited to be on this journey with Biossance and be at the forefront of clean beauty innovation.

Squalane: Everything You Wanted to Know

As passionate as we are about squalane, we know there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding the multitasking superstar: Is there a difference between squalane and squalene? (Spoiler: Yes! A few major ones.) Why is our vegan squalane derived from sugarcane instead of olives like most other formulas? What makes us love this ingredient so much that we’ve included it in all of our products?
