Our Sustainability Impact

by Beth Wischnia April 20, 2020

This year, April 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Instead of spending the day planting trees or doing a beach cleanup, we are sheltering in place—we are inside as the planet recovers outside. Humanity is taking a break and so is the environment. We are all healing.

Our current reality gives us the opportunity for a fresh perspective and a renewed, deeper appreciation for crisp air, green grass, blue skies, and endless oceans. Now, more than ever is the time to show extra love, gratitude, and kindness to ourselves and the earth.

Biossance was born out of a desire to make the world a better place. This is truly the heart of our brand. We’re more committed than ever to people and the environment and will continue to prioritize our sustainability initiatives.

BIOSSANCE SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES

  • - SAVING SHARKS

Did you know that squalene was originally inhumanely harvested from shark liver? Our sustainably sourced, Brazillian sugarcane-derived squalane saves 2 million sharks every year.

  • - CARBON-NEUTRAL SHIPPING

We’re officially carbon neutral! For each order shipped, we plant trees—which are incredible, natural detoxifiers— and fund reforestation projects at no additional cost to you.

  • - ZERO WASTE BY 2025

We’re offsetting our carbon emissions, developing a packaging return redemption program and reviewing our office paper and plastic consumption.

  • - CLEAN FORMULATIONS

We ban 2,000+ ingredients that are toxic to both you and the environment. All Biossance products are also EWG VERIFIED™.

  • - GREEN LAB CERTIFICATION

All Biossance formulations are developed in a My Green Lab Platinum Certified facility, reducing our environmental impact with every product we create.

  • - RECYCLABLE PACKAGING

We’re working toward this by incorporating post-consumer recycled materials into our packaging.

My industry experience includes years as a beauty editor and leading content for a wide range of skincare and makeup brands. Those experiences led me to Biossance—I was introduced to the brand on an editor press trip in 2017 and instantly fell in love. I toured the labs, created my own 100% Squalane with essential oils, and noticed a dramatic difference in my skin by introducing clean products (especially the Vitamin C Rose Oil) to my regimen. I’m excited to be on this journey with Biossance and be at the forefront of clean beauty innovation.

Three years ago, we launched this facial oil as our second product, after our head-to-toe hydrating 100% Squalane Oil. Our team of scientists set out to create another powerfully hydrating formula except this time, we wanted to make our first skincare product specifically for the face–one that still features the weightless hydration of squalane while also offering additional treatment benefits. Our standout formula comes packed with an exclusive set of ingredients that work together to visibly hydrate, firm, and give skin a healthy, radiant glow.

Clean, healthy hands are more important than ever. While hand sanitizing is an easy and effective way to defend against harmful germs and bacteria, too much of certain hand sanitizer formulas can strip the skin of much-needed moisture, leaving it feeling dehydrated, irritated, and red. With this in mind, Biossance is excited to deliver the ultimate hand sanitizer to help: a hyper-effective and hydrating solution that uses scientific expertise to give you the softest, healthiest hands.

Ever since Biossance began, we’ve been on a mission to save the ocean’s apex predators. This species has long been hunted for its squalene, an oil in their livers used in skincare and makeup products. As a vegan alternative, our scientists pioneered renewable sugarcane-derived squalane. Thanks to this innovation, 2 million of these critical members of the ocean ecosystem are saved every year.
