Environmental Working Group (EWG)
The mission of EWG is “to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment.” This non-profit research and education organization is dedicated to helping consumers make informed choices—from purchasing cosmetics to food, to even the water we drink. In addition to offering a plethora of free consumer guides, their online database Skin Deep® provides a rating system for personal care products and their ingredients. This database has become the go-to source for information in helping expose potential health concerns about the products we slather on our bodies.
Our partnership with EWG starts with each of our formulas by making sure we meet the rigorous EWG Verified™ standards. This process includes submitting detailed information on our ingredients—from safety data sheets to clinical test results—to assure that our formulas are safely preserved and free of contaminants. We like that idea.
In addition to our own 2000+ blacklist, we don’t use any ingredients that are on the EWG’s “unacceptable” list. While it would most definitely be easier and cheaper to create products without these standards—and there are quite a few companies that do—we’re more interested in making skincare that’s actually good for you and our planet. Because, you know, your well-being kinda depends on it, and that means something to us.
Think Dirty was founded out of a desire to find healthier and cleaner beauty alternatives. After founder Lily Tse’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, she began researching potential causes for the disease and was blown away by what she found. She discovered that some of the commonly used ingredients in personal care products are hormone disruptors with possible links to breast cancer. On top of that, the beauty industry as a whole sorely lacks regulation. From there she went on a quest to create true transparency in the world of beauty while also helping others along the way—and the Think Dirty app was born.
Think Dirty is an invaluable tool in helping guide you in finding nontoxic personal care, even as you shop. Scan a product’s barcode and it will pull up the ingredient list and show how it compares in terms of potential toxicity. With over 550,000 products in the Think Dirty database, it’s an easy way to learn about the products you currently use, as well as help you make healthier choices going forward. And like EWG’s Skin Deep, their Dirty Meter™ rates products for any potential issues. If something not-so-good pops up, the app will then suggest cleaner and healthier alternatives for you.

My lifelong obsession with the world of beauty started at an early age and kicked off right out of high school as a makeup artist. My dreams of being the next big thing in Hollywood took a detour as I discovered esthetics and became fascinated with how the skin functions. From there I worked post-operatively with patients in a burn trauma unit, helping them care for their skin and conceal their scars. This led to product formulation and the world of aromatherapy where I began my career in product development. As a consultant for several years working with many startups, I quickly became the go-to in helping launch and rebrand product lines, my specialties in product formulation, regulatory compliant copywriting and building cohesive brand personalities. My love of natural and sustainable beauty led me to Biossance, where I happily reside as Senior Marketing Manager for new product development.
